Official name of the South Loop Project unveiled at the Downtown Council

By Ann Holliday, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Downtown Council of Kansas City

The future of downtown Kansas City took a major step forward today with the unveiling of the new official name of the South Loop Project: Roy Blunt Luminary Park. Three years after its initial introduction at the same event, the name was announced by the Project Partners – the Downtown Council of Kansas City, Kansas City, and Port KC – during the Downtown Council 2025 Annual Luncheon.

Distinctive. Visionary. Intuitive. Roy Blunt Luminary Park pays tribute to longtime public servant Senator Roy Blunt, celebrates the light at the heart of a vibrant city, and embodies the bright future of Kansas City.

Unveiled before an audience of business leaders, community stakeholders, and city officials, Roy Blunt Luminary Park reflects the bold ambition to create an inclusive and vibrant public space for residents and visitors alike.

This 5.5-acre urban park will span I-670, transforming the area into a dynamic gathering place and catalyst for economic development. It is an ambitious, once-in-a-generation opportunity that will create a vibrant urban haven for gathering, play, education and cultural art, along with quiet, reflective spaces, accessible to everyone in our community.

Nestled in the center of Kansas City, this visionary and transformational green space will add yet another element to an already flourishing downtown and become a destination for residents and visitors from across the nation.

The announcement marks a key milestone in the project’s evolution, setting the stage for the next phase of development that will shine a light on Kansas City’s national and global presence.

The park is expected to drive economic growth, strengthen connections between neighborhoods, and serve as a beacon of innovation and civic pride in the heart of Downtown Kansas City.
