Garment District Grooves Concert Series
Tucked in the heart of downtown’s historic Garment District, surrounded by brick buildings towering for over 100 years, is a pocket park with a rich history and an even richer future. The stretch of 8th Street between Broadway and Washington used to be the tunnel entrance for an original KC Streetcar line between Downtown and the West Bottoms. When that line was removed, the street was widened, graded, and refinished, creating a beautiful park that hosts the free, monthly concerts running from April through October.
In the early 2000s, Harvey Fried, co-founder of the Historic Garment District Museum and long-time board member for the Downtown Community Improvement District (DCID), hosted free concerts in the park. As a nod to those past concerts and with the opening of the Crossroads Preparatory Academy at 9th and Broadway, a partnership was formed between the DCID, KC Parks, Crossroads Prep, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association to resurrect concerts in the park.
Free concert? Yes, please!
Now in its fifth season, Garment District Grooves welcomes patrons to the park for a free concert every third Wednesday of the month from April through October starting at 11:30am and finishing at 1:00pm. On top of the live music from local musicians such as Stan Kessler and Max Groove, food trucks are available during the concert inviting and engaging people to enjoy lunch during the show.
Garment District Grooves has developed a new, stronger relationship between the involved civic organizations and the surrounding businesses and residents in the area. The growing popularity of the concerts have drawn the attention of community clean-ups and improving the park all to help refine the green space for all to enjoy.
We invite you to join us at one or more of the last three concerts of the season.
There are three more concerts to wrap up the 2023 season; September 20th starring Bill Abernathy (Urban Knife will be the food truck) and October 18th starring Max Levy (Ragusa’s Italian Cafe will be the food truck). There will also be a special Garment District Grooves – After Hours concert for those who can’t make it over lunch. It is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Sisters & Strings Infusion will be the band. Krazy Crepes will be the food truck and Tom’s Travelers Bartending will be on-site for drinks. We hope you can join us!
