Buckle up! Union Station to kickoff centennial fever
Union Station Kansas City will kick off “60 days of celebration” this Friday evening with a centennial celebration of music, lights, fireworks and football from 5-9:30 p.m. The outdoor event is free and open to the public.
Friday evening’s public bash will be the first event leading up to its 100th anniversary at “KC Celebrates at Union Station“ on Thursday, Oct. 30 and a special weekend of festivities on Oct. 30-Nov. 2.
In the meantime, the “60 days” begins on Friday with a spectacular liftoff. The fun will begin at 5 p.m. with a live concert by country-rocker Logan Mize — a show so hot that it was just announced this week.
The headliner on Friday will be “The Monument Comes Alive”, a never-before-seen high-tech journey created by Quixotic.
Using state of the art projection mapping and twelve 20K digital projectors, the exterior of the Station will be transformed into an enormous 3D digital canvas that will soar a full ten stories tall and one city block wide.
Presented by Ivy Funds, Waddell and Reed, and the National World War I Museum, the digitally animated scrapbook will be set to an original musical score.
Kansas City’s Quixotic — the internationally recognized, multi-media performing arts group — in partnership with Bazillion Pictures and BIC Media, has created this electrifying digital show that captures 100 years of Kansas City history.
“We have created an event for the entire community that will not only pay tribute to Kansas City’s most iconic landmark, but celebrate our shared history,” said George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station.
“That history has been captured and brought to life by the creative visionaries at Quixotic, who will take the crowd on a fully immersive digital ride the entire city will be talking about for many years to come.”
As part of the festivities, the Kansas City Chiefs will host their annual Red Friday Pep Rally – the official kickoff to the start of the football season.
The team is partnering with KCTV 5, KSMO TV, Kansas City’s iconic monument and the city, as Union Station celebrates 100 years of connecting the community, not only with the people of Kansas City, but also in linking the greater metropolitan area to the surrounding region.
Union Station officials expect a sizeable gathering and encourage attendees to bring lawn chairs and blankets, and arrive outside the Station and surrounding grounds as early as 5 p.m. to enjoy the entire evening.
